Time: 2023.10.20 (Fri.) 10:00-12:00p.m.

Venue: Room 101, College of Public Health, NTU (17 Xuzhou Road, Taipei, Taiwan)

Topic: Triangulation of Evidence

Speaker: Prof. George Davey Smith

The award recipient this year is Professor George Davey Smith from the University of Bristol, UK. He is a renowned British clinical epidemiologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society in London, internationally recognized for his research in social epidemiology, life course epidemiology, and genetic epidemiology.

Twenty years ago, Professor Davey Smith introduced the concept of Mendelian Randomization, a method designed to adjust for confounding variables in observational studies when examining the relationship between risk factors and disease outcomes. The approach which uses genetic variants as instrumental variables, has revolutionized modern epidemiological research, addressing longstanding debates in the field. Thanks to Mendelian Randomization, exploring causal relationships through observational studies is no longer just an aspiration, and causality is no longer the sole domain of randomized controlled trials.

Professor Davey Smith currently serves as the Director of the Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) at the University of Bristol. Established in 2013 with funding from the UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC), the IEU recently secured an additional £11 million from the MRC to support its next five-year research program.

Throughout his career, Professor Davey Smith has published over 2,600 research papers, amassing more than 300,000 citations. Beyond his groundbreaking contributions to epidemiology, he has been a long-time advocate for addressing health inequalities and is a strong proponent of Open Data and Open Science movements.
